The Credit Union was registered in April 2001 under the name Cumnock & Doon Valley Credit Union.
As a study group the founders explored how to form and run the credit union and from there began to recruit members.
As the credit union expanded it was agreed to the new name of Sovereign Credit Union and this was registered in January 2012 Serving anyone living or working in Ayrshire, Arran, Dumfries & Galloway further expanding to new membership.
The credit union employees help set up credit unions in schools and teach the schoolchildren how to manage their finances through a series of carefully structured lessons.
Thanks to a project backed by the Scottish Government five schools are running the junior savers scheme which aims to encourage better financial acumen and prepare pupils for entering the world of work.
By 2018 members could do on line banking and access accounts information using the credit union mobile app.
