The credit union has been run entirely by volunteers who had after some long serious discussions with their trade association ABCUL receiving training, support and advice on running a credit union.
The principles of Co-operation and self-help were the motivating factors in the setting up of the Credit Union. With a view to helping families and individuals in the credit union area to improve their quality of life
Collection points were originally only at Bowmore and port Ellen others followed as the credit union expanded the membership.
The Common Bond is for those who live or work on Islay or Jura over the age of 16.
Junior members began to join at port Charlotte primary school and there is hope that others will take part. Children can start saving until 16 and can then transfer to an adult account helping them with finances as they go through life.
