Beragh Credit Union was founded on the 12th February 1974. Membership is open to anyone who lives in the Beragh area. The credit union has grown over the years and 2015 was when members could access their credit union account on-line 24/7 and could even apply for new loans via the members’ area. Borrowers got back 35% of the interest they paid on their loan throughout the financial year from 2011 – 35p for every £1 paid in interest. That was the 7th consecutive year at 35%.

Dividend paid for 2018 was at 0.75% up from 0.5% on previous year. Since it started in 2015 local school children took part in the first round of the Credit Union Schools Quiz. The Quiz is divided into two sections: Competition A for children up to 11 and Competition B for children under 13. Winning teams from local level go through to the Regional Finals and regional winners and runners-up (100 teams of 4 children) do compete in the national final. It is organised with the Irish League of Credit Unions.
Another initiative the credit union supports is National Credit Union GR8 Savers Week. The initiative aims to encourage children to develop smart money habits and to understand the importance of saving on a regular basis.
