Former Credit Unions

Up to 2020

Many credit unions have emerged in the United Kingdom since the 1960s. Some stay small, others grow big and many choose to merge in the interests of their members. However, some unfortunately fall by the wayside.

While there are many reasons, these credit unions were all founded with the same good intentions and principles, making them a small but important part of the credit union movement.

Thameswood Credit Union Limited

St Anthony’s (Clayton) Credit Union Ltd Registered in January 1985. Common Bonds: An individual who is associated through attendance of St Anthony’s RC Primary School. Associates of Church/Community groups established and operating from the church and/or school premises.

Money box Credit UnionRegistered in November 1997 as The Leominster Money Box Credit Limited. Changing registration in September 2004 to Moneybox and during that time providing fair and ethical financial services to the people of Herefordshire. The credit union became part of Just Credit Union since 2002.

Offerton Credit Union The credit Union is a local, not for profit financial institution. Registered in October 1995 by a group of local people as an Industrial and Provident Society with Companies House Number 443 CU. They were a small local credit union based in The Dialstone Centre Lisburne Lane Offerton Stockport and ceased trading in May 2006. No Longer authorised 2005

Breightmet Credit Union The credit Union is a local, not for profit financial institution. Registered in 1996 by a group of local people as an Industrial and Provident Society with Companies House Number 463CUS.They were a small local credit union based in New lane Bolton and ceased trading in Late 2003. Johnson Fold (Bolton) Credit Union Limited The credit Union is a local, not for profit financial institution. Registered in July 1990 by a group of local people as an Industrial and Provident Society company under the 1979 Credit Union Act, with Companies House Number 204CUS.They were a small local credit union based in the local community center and played a very active part in the 90’s in assisting other fledgling credit unions a venue for training from the greater Manchester area. At the present moment we are under going some changes which involve merging with another Credit union that can offer better facilities and products e.g. loans, mortgages, car loans etc. Please bear with us while this takes place as share withdrawals and loans may take longer than normal to process. Haven Credit Union Companies House Number 369C Began life as Pembroke Borough Credit Union in 1993, as a service for the areas of Pembroke, Monkton and Pembroke Dock. In 2002 Pembroke Borough Credit Union amalgamated with the newly formed Credit Union encompassing the extra towns of Milford Haven, Neyland, Haverford west and the surrounding areas. Since then, Haven Credit Union, as we are now known, has grown from strength to strength, working closely with local employers, housing associations and community groups. Our ‘common bond’ – the area in which we operate – now covers the whole of Pembrokeshire. Closed 15 March 2015. Ted Sangster, chairman of HCU said: “The board has taken this decision only after long and serious consideration of the alternatives. Having explored in detail the opportunity to merge with another credit union but failed to reach agreement we have concluded that we cannot demonstrate to the Regulator or in fact to ourselves and our members that there is any realistic likelihood of moving from our current performance of ticking over but failing to meet the required capital threshold to one of sustainable and acceptable performance in compliance with all regulatory requirements. “We recognise that our members, staff and large number of volunteers will be disappointed and will also have significant concerns

Norfolk Credit Union Companies House Number 680C Was made up of 20 of what was known as community banks and a Bee Savers Club involved in a lot of local communities The Chair of Norfolk Credit Union, was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to the credit union. A founder member of South Norfolk Credit Union which began trading in 2002, In 2007 it extended to cover the whole of the rural county. The credit union had over 30 local branches.

2016

Greyabbey Credit Union Limited. They were registered November 1998 as an Industrial Provident Society Company Greyabbey Credit Union merges with Newtownards Credit Union in October 2016. Members of Greyabbey have been transferred to Newtownards and can now make their transactions in the Newtownards office. Main Street, Greyabbey, Newtownards, Down BT22 2NF.

North east Lincolnshire Credit Union Companies House Number 604 was Established in 1999 as Started as St George’s (Scunthorpe)Credit Union. After 16 years in business, the North Lincolnshire Credit Union became part of Hull & East Yorkshire Credit Union they merged in 2015., the North East Lincolnshire Credit Union.

Moneymore Credit Union. They were registered on 22/08/1997 at Stonard Street, Moneymore, and Magherafelt, Cookstown BT45 7PN.

2018

Dunfermline & District Credit Union. They were established in 1994. They provided savings and loans at the heart of the community and began as Abbeyview Credit Union Limited until 2002 when it extended common bond and was renamed as above. This credit union was a member of the Scottish League of Credit Unions (SLCU). They were a locally based community organisation that offers a government-guaranteed savings and loans facility to their members supported by Fife’s Credit Union Development team. North East Scotland Credit Union. Established in 1998, they were part of an international network of one hundred million people, helping each other by saving and borrowing together. Operating from 2003, when formed by amalgamation of several smaller credit unions. We currently have 3,500 members, over £1 million in savings. Their Previous address was, 7 Finnan Place, Aberdeen, AB11 8RG.

Shetlands Islands credit union Limited. This is the most northerly Credit Union in the British Isles 200 miles from Aberdeen. After 11 years in the making it was finally set up in March 2011. By March 2014 it had 300+ members. The credit union is no longer authorised since June 2018.

PCS Credit Union is celebrating reaching more milestones in its continuing growth. The credit union, which was founded in 2012 to serve members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) trade union, had one of its most successful months in June, as membership topped 2,250 and – for the first time in its short history – the credit union took in more than £100,000 in members’ deposits in a single month. PCS Credit Union reached £1 million in members’ shares towards the end of last year, and the credit union has increasingly turned its focus to lending, with the amount out on loan now exceeding £350,000. In the three years since its authorisation, PCS Credit Union has worked hard to provide secure savings and a growing suite of low-cost loan products for members of the PCS trade union and their immediate family. Its members include civil servants and employees of current and former government agencies across Britain.

Polish Credit Union UK Ltd. The Credit Union was registered in December of 2012 had a single branch in West Ealing, London. It was launched in January 2013 to provide savings accounts and loans for the Polish community. It had more than 500 members. Sadly in 2018 it was unauthorised; credit unions can face problems when engaging new members and responsibly increasing loan books requires to ensure viability and regulatory compliance.

TEESSIDE’S community bank Tees Credit Union Companies House Number343Cwas looking to future expansion after securing three years of funding from the Northern Rock Foundation. However along with other credit union in the area became part of Moneywise Credit Union. See Moneywise History.

2019

Greater Milton & Possil Park Credit Union. This Credit Union was established in 1996 and in 1991 the Credit Union got together and was known as Greater Milton Credit Union registered in 1996 according to FCA records. The name was changed to include Possil Park and has been serving residential communities in Glasgow post codes G21G22 G23 as well as Possilpark, Springburn, Bishopsbriggs and Milton. They operated a satellite office on a Saturday between 10am-12pm at Possilpark Parish Church.

Parkhead Credit Union Limited. The operations and management of the credit union was carried out by volunteers to provide the services of Savings and Loans to members. After over 20 years in April 2019 the east end of Glasgow credit union has ceased trading. 922 Springfield Road Glasgow Lanarkshire G31 4HE.

STAR Credit Union Limited MERGED This credit union is recorded as active from April 1993. However, we are informed it has merged with Stramore Community Credit Union Limited.

Braniel Credit Union Limited had been running since November 1996 with the registered office located in Belfast, County Down. It was a small community credit union run by Volunteers.
