The credit union began when a group of parishioners got together at the request of the then Parish Priest and later registered for business in March 1994.

The credit union is available through St Bernadette’s and St Michaels Social Clubs.
From then they continue to provide the services of Savings and Loans to people resident in the area south of Bury and Whitefield between Dumers Lane and M62 motorway.
The operations and management of the credit union is carried out by volunteers and has been in business for over 25 years.
It exists solely for the benefit of its members and run entirely by the volunteers for all those years.
As one of the GB’s smallest volunteer run credit unions with only 150 members, it was increasingly difficult for SBCU to appeal to the next generation. So the Credit Union in 2022 transferred engagements to Hoot Credit Union enabling the members to continue getting access to affordable saving and borrowing with a local credit union.
