In January 2002 these three organisations joined together to create a borough-wide Credit Union, which extended its common bond to those who live and / or work in Halton
Weaver Vale MP Mike Amesbury has praised the work of Halton Credit Union following a visit to its office in Runcorn. He said: “The staff and volunteers at Halton Credit Union are doing fantastic work and it is something they are clearly passionate about. It is a non-profit making financial co-operative, which offers a convenient saving and borrowing service to its members.
The financial strength of HCU has allowed an expansion and to further cement its place in the local community. Over the summer of 2019 the credit union opened a new branch in Widnes Town Centre. The credit union were delighted that The Right Honourable Councillor Margaret Horabin, the Lady Mayor of Halton, officially opened the office and were joined by Derek Twigg MP who took the opportunity to become a member by opening an account.
Success over the many years is due to the commitment of everyone in the credit union Staff, Volunteers, Officers and Directors and Avril Green who died recently. Avril had worked as a volunteer for over 20 years and a sad loss to the community.
2022 Celebrating 20 years together HCU now has over 5000 Members and in 2018 extended its common bond which allows people who live and/or work in Cheshire, Stockport, Skelmersdale and Stoke to join. Since its inception, HCU has given out over £36 million in loans to members.
