GMB Credit Union was established in 1999 but was registered with the FCA as Thorne Credit Union Limited in June 2002 later trading as TCU Money from June 2012.

In 2014 the TCU Money introduced a deposit account of £5 for new junior accounts to encourage members children or grandchildren to save and the Member scheme gives £10 for every new account opened by someone the members introduce.
The credit union continues to evolve and the new name of GMB Credit Union occurred in 2016 continuing for members and their families nationally.
The AGM in 2017 agreed a 2% dividend on all credit union easy access savings accounts for the 2016 financial year.
2018 saw the credit union partner with the Callcredit to offer all GMB members free for life access to the Noddle Service. Noddle gives members unlimited access to the data that is used to determine their credit score.
Further innovation arrived in January 2019 that involved the introduction of NIVO a secure messaging app enabling members to share data and information as part of joining and applying for Loans and saving accounts.
Members can also discuss by secure messaging any account related matter such as change of personal details, amendment of a direct debit or request a balance or statement.
The 20th AGM took place on Saturday 23 March 2019 at GMB Midlands & East Coast Regional Offices and agreed a dividend of 2.1% on easy access savings accounts. Membership is around 4000.

GMBCU in 2022 has exceeded £15 million in assets
