Community First Credit Union

Community First was launched by a group of people from Barnsley trading as Barnsley Credit Union ltd from June 2002 until 2009.

Community First Credit Union

Open to anyone who lived or worked in Barnsley Metropolitan Borough. It started with Coalfields Grant and the Local authority did allow payroll deduction, but only in the Town Hall. In October 2006, they were awarded the Growth Fund contract.

In July 2008, they merged with Little Dearne Credit Union with 800 active members and also in July 2008 managed Danum CU Growth Fund contract. May 2010 saw the merger with Danum Credit Union with 2000 active members. The South Yorkshire Credit Union was trading from May 2009 with the expansion of the common bond and joining forces with The Ridings Credit Union Ltd who were trading from October 2012.

The trading name changed to MY Money credit Union in the August of 2016. By June 2017 the Community First Credit Union Came into being and has grown continuously since. November 2018 the credit union had won multiple categories at the Edward Filene Credit Union Awards for Excellence. Channel five featured the credit union in the same year delivering services to their members.

The credit union operates a number of volunteers who run collection points in a number of schools in the area to foster the ethos that saving as a habit is best introduced at an early age. It is open to people living or working in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, City of York and North and South Yorkshire.
