Affinity Credit Union

Affinity Credit Union is a community-based credit union, serving people who live and/or work in the region of West Cumbria.

Affinity Credit Union

The beginnings of Affinity date back to 1994, when the Cleator Moor & District Credit Union was established. Originally a joint Church initiative, the credit union was legally registered in October 1995.

A few years later, in 2000, the Mayport and North Allerdale Credit Union was founded, joined by the Workington & District Credit Union in 2002. All three aimed to provide alternative financial services to their respective local communities, breaking the dependency of families and individuals on unscrupulous lenders.

Eventually, in October 2015, the three credit unions merged, recognising their common cause – to get a better deal for their communities. In order to safeguard the future of their organisations, they formed the West Cumbria Credit Union – Affinity.

Moving forward, their aim is to maintain and enhance financial self-sustainability through increased membership and the uptake of products and services. Affinity is committed to working in partnership with other local credit unions to help promote and sustain the long-term survival and expansion of the credit union movement throughout the whole of Cumbria.

The Credit Union has merged with Pennine Community Credit Union in order to achieve greater sustainability and service provision for its combined member base.
